Chocolate cake-like topping with saucy chocolate base

Ingredients
Sauce
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tablespoons (¼ stick) butter
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 cup water
Cake
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • pinch of salt
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons (¼ stick) butter
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts, optional
Instructions
  1. Place the sauce ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to the boil, while stirring, to dissolve the sugar.
  2. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, cocoa and salt in a mixing bowl.
  4. Heat the milk and butter together until the butter has melted.
  5. Add the vanilla and fold into the dry ingredients.
  6. Fold in the nuts.
  7. Scrape into a 1.5-quart (6 cup) ovenproof bowl.
  8. Pour the sauce carefully over this and bake at 350˚ F for 25-35 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean.
  9. Serve hot with cream, custard or ice cream.
